Combustion Infrared Detection:
A weighed sample is melted in a ceramic crucible in a stream of oxygen. A Tungsten and iron flux is used to facilitate melting. Carbon released from the melted sample combines with the oxygen to form CO2 and CO. The CO is converted by a catalyst to CO2. An infrared detector measures the amount of CO2 from which the weight % of carbon in the sample is calculated. Sulfur released from the melted sample combines with the oxygen to form SO2. An infrared detector measures the amount of SO2 from which the weight % of sulfur in the sample is calculated. Calibration is verified with NIST or NIST traceable standard reference materials of known carbon and sulfur content. AAL has experience with determination of carbon content ranging from trace amounts less than 5 ppm to the percentages present in metal carbides.
